Girl Scouts or Sales Reps?
Girl Scouts or Sales Reps?
Last week when I was walking past a grocery store I was thrilled to see my favorite booth perched outside. From the big kelly green sign and little girls in familiar uniforms I knew it was Girl Scout Cookie season! I always look forward to these three short weeks when I can hand $4 to a girl scout in exchange for a delicious box of Tagalongs or Thin Mints. Yum!
Now I did not have cash with me this time when I walked by the booth, so I wasn't able to buy right then and there. But in my regret, I noticed something different about these girl scouts as compared to years before. While one was standing behind the booth, the other two girls were holding signs and walking right up to people trying to convince them to buy a box. The first thought that comes to mind is that this recession is turning these innocent girl scouts into pint-size pavement-hiting sales reps! Back in the day when I sold these rare treats all I had to do was stand with my mom and smile. No sign-holding or running down the sidewalk to catch the last person that exited the grocery store.
Any former Girl Scout can sympathize. We know how important it is for these girls to develop leadership, goal setting, teamwork, and most importantly, money management skills. Honestly, I think I just learned how to get my mom to take the order form to work and return with it completely filled by coworkers. Thanks mom!
All in all, I would like to encourage you to seek out that little green booth and indulge in at least one box of your favorite cookies. It's a win-win situation! The Girl Scout Program will continue with our support and your taste buds will love it!
